Chile Week 2 - Harli Lockhart

Has it really already been two weeks??? Time is flying, but I guess because I have been enjoying myself so much! This past weekend, we had a long, four day weekend. We traveled to Dichato and Talcuano two different days to walk the beaches and have lunch. It was a great time spent out of the school and house. Another day, my brother barbecued for the family and I tried my first Chilean bear. I also had one very lazy day filled with Netflix movies, which I did not mind at all. I'm not sure if I will ever catch up on sleep! I did start feeling sick at the beginning of the week, but I feel much better now. My family has taken great care of me and gotten me everything I need for this sickness plus some.

¿Realmente ya han pasado dos semanas? El tiempo vuela, pero supongo que porque me he estado divirtiendo mucho. Este fin de semana pasado, tuvimos un fin de semana largo de cuatro días. Viajamos a Dichato y Talcuano dos días diferentes para caminar por las playas y almorzar. Fue un gran tiempo pasado fuera de la escuela y la casa. Otro día, mi hermano hizo una barbacoa para la familia y yo probé mi primer oso chileno. También tuve un día muy perezoso lleno de películas de Netflix, que no me importó en absoluto. ¡No estoy seguro de si alguna vez me pondré a dormir! Comencé a sentirme mal a principios de semana, pero ahora me siento mucho mejor. Mi familia me ha cuidado mucho y me ha conseguido todo lo que necesito para esta enfermedad, más algunas.



When we finally went back to school Wednesday, I gave a presentation on something to do with the United States. My presentation focused on some of the most celebrated holidays in America. The holidays I chose were New Years Eve/Day, MLK Jr. Day, Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve/Day. The students really enjoyed it, I believe. They had many questions to ask and were extremely intrigued by the idea of parades and how we use them when celebrating many holidays. My teacher even used my presentation as a grade for her students. The students were to illustrate their favorite holiday we talked about.

Cuando finalmente volvimos a la escuela el miércoles, di una presentación sobre algo que hacer con los Estados Unidos. Mi presentación se centró en algunas de las fiestas más famosas de América. Los días festivos que elegí fueron Nochevieja / Día, Día de MLK Jr., Día de San Valentín, Mardi Gras, Semana Santa, Día de los Caídos, Día de la Independencia, Día del Trabajo, Halloween, Día de Acción de Gracias y Nochebuena / Día. Los estudiantes realmente lo disfrutaron, creo. Tenían muchas preguntas que hacer y estaban extremadamente intrigados por la idea de los desfiles y cómo los usamos cuando celebramos muchas fiestas. Mi maestra incluso usó mi presentación como un grado para sus estudiantes. Los estudiantes debían ilustrar sus vacaciones favoritas de las que hablamos.
Today, Thursday, I judged a spelling bee for third and fourth graders. They were so adorable. I was really impressed by how competitive they were yet still supportive of their friends at the same time. It showed a grace many adults do not exhibit. Anita and Chris' presentation after school was fantastic. I feel as if I was given a lot of useful information that I can put into action in my own classroom. And as for Kelly's guided meditation session, I think that is what will get me through the rest of this trip. I still feel so relieved and calm and I do not think anything could stress me out for some time.

Hoy, jueves, juzgué a una abeja de ortografía para estudiantes de tercer y cuarto grado. Eran tan adorables Quedé realmente impresionado por lo competitivos que eran todavía al mismo tiempo que apoyaban a sus amigos. Mostraba una gracia que muchos adultos no exhiben. La presentación de Anita y Chris después de la escuela fue fantástica. Siento que me dieron mucha información útil que puedo poner en acción en mi propia clase. Y en cuanto a la sesión de meditación guiada de Kelly, creo que eso es lo que me ayudará en el resto de este viaje. Todavía me siento aliviado y tranquilo, y no creo que nada pueda estresarme durante algún tiempo.
I am starting to feel a little homesick but I have found that my host family resembles my actual family in many ways, which makes it easier. I really just miss my dog, but I always miss my dog. I am excited for this last weekend and the week to come!

Estoy empezando a sentir un poco de nostalgia, pero he descubierto que mi familia anfitriona se parece a mi familia real de muchas maneras, lo que lo hace más fácil. Realmente extraño a mi perro, pero siempre extraño a mi perro. ¡Estoy emocionado por este último fin de semana y la semana que viene!

Well...I’m still speechless... This past week has presented many more opportunities that have sparked joy in my life.  The food gets better and better, the hospitality never ceases and the culture continuously amazes me!  I’m surrounded by such an awesome group of individuals who are still guiding me in all aspects of the Chilean life and there’s still another entire week to go. First and foremost, let’s talk about the delicious food.  I actually conversed with a Chilean man named Ricardo Suazo on the flight from Dallas to Santiago. Week 3 ~ Ruth

I can't believe it's week 3!  I'm sure most people in my position have said this. I'm already starting to get nostalgic now that I realize how much time is limited.  My family has been so kind and loving that I wish I could really give them as much as they have given me.  I know that I will treasure the memories I have made with them.  And I'm thankful for the many pictures they have taken that will hold some of these memories. Week 3 has been eventful to say the least.  I was able to go to downtown Concepcion for the first time.  I remember being surprised at how big the center city was.   The shops were endless and there were many people out and about for a Monday.  I guess I didn't realize how urban it truly was. On Tuesday, I was able to visit both the markets in Chillán and the termas de Chillan (hot springs).  Both were lovely experiences.  I had never been in natural hot springs in my life until now.  The heat surp...

Chile Week 3 - Harli Locjhart

This last week has been the most fun. I did so many new things and saw so many new places. I cannot thank my host family and CCSP enough for these adventures. Last weekend, I went where the river meets the Pacific Ocean and it was beautiful. The sea will always be my favorite place to be and I am so glad I was able to see two huge water ways come together in such an incredible way. My older siblings also took me out dancing Friday night. There was a band playing live Chilean music and although I could not understand much, I still had such a fun time dancing and meeting new people. My family also brought me to the water fall in Laja. I have never seen a real waterfall before and it was so inspiring. To wind the weekend down, my little sister's class had a BBQ for new students at the school Sunday afternoon.
